Parties unite to fight plans for new homes

POLITICS were pushed aside as the campaign to save South East Dorset from the threat of 48,000 new homes was launched in robust style.

Councillors representing an area including Christchurch, East Dorset and Purbeck pledged to work together to fight the government's house-building figures.

South east Dorset has been told it should plan on 48,100 new homes in the next 18 years but the government is currently considering whether to increase this.

In any case, it has been made clear to local councils that the government will not be funding improvements to local roads, schools, hospitals or sewerage systems but instead expects them to work with developers.

Conservative, Liberal Democrat, Labour and Independent councillors from across the region met at Bournemouth Town Hall to decide how best to mobilise public support and fight the plans.

Ideas suggested include forming a human chain from Throop to Upton, carrying out a mass leaflet drop of residents and holding a rally outside the BIC for the Local Government Association conference next week. The Lytchett Minster action group has also put a petition on the 10 Downing Street Website.

Annette Brooke, MP for Mid Dorset and North Poole, said: "It's important to keep the identity of our communities. Villages are an important part of English life and I really don't believe Dorset should be building edge to edge.

"We are inter-dependent on each other but I would contend that we don't want to be just one huge urban area."

And Cllr Ron Parker, Poole's cabinet member for the economy, said: "There is no financial support available to address the shortfall in infrastructure.

"It's just not sufficient to rely on developers' contributions to provide this infrastructure, when there are so many demands on them in the current economic climate."

What you do ,tell them to take a hike-no negotiations- no capitulation, no trade off- just tell them to clear off.
Most of all stop being so damned polite about it, sterner stuff required I think . Be more like the French!!

I have read that councils will be fined /legally bound to comply and cooperate with all the GOV-Quangos who are driving this build forward.
I really think everyone must tackle this head on- read up on South west regional development agency + Government for the South west + and South west regional assembly- A lot of info on statistics on empty dwellings, how many need homes, less than you think, and many other facts and figures.

I dont think its a case of houses or no houses the best you can hope for is a reduction in the number of houses. Its all very well to say no houses put them somewhere else but they plan to build all over the country. So like it or not new houses are on their way the only question is how many & how many can we sustain ie infrastructure / jobs etc.

If we have to build into our greenbelt land (which I firmly oppose) then can't we make them more integrated into the enviroment and have them more eco friendly than just sticking an intrusion of brick and cement into the natural environment?

Gyppo,
If you think that the French have a bad rep, you should live here. They think that in G.B. we keep a bath to store coal in!

Tried to keep up with the times and store gas in mine. Fine until I paused for thought while sitting on the adjacent appliance and lit a fag. Then the ambulancemen laughed so much they dropped the stretcher going down the stairs and broke my leg. Stick to coal.

All we need to know is this "In any case, it has been made clear to local councils that the government will not be funding improvements to local roads, schools, hospitals or sewerage systems but instead expects them to work with developers." is all there, get the developers to pay for everything the government should be paying for, if we need the houses or not. Its all b@ll Sh*t, still Browne will be gone soon enough.
